WHERE TO EAT…
Bonsai Japanese Restaurant — Poughkeepsie's Go-To for Authentic Japanese Cuisine
For anyone craving fresh sushi, perfectly prepared teriyaki, or a quiet dinner that feels like a getaway, Bonsai Japanese Restaurant has been a reliable favorite in Poughkeepsie for years. What started as a single location has grown into three Hudson Valley spots, a testament to the loyal following they have built one roll at a time.
The menu is extensive without being overwhelming. Start with the Hamachi Kama, a broiled yellowtail jaw that practically melts off the bone, or the Rock Shrimp Tempura drizzled with a spicy creamy sauce. Sushi lovers will find everything from classic rolls and hand rolls to specialty creations like the Yellowtail Jalapeno and Spicy Tuna Crunchy Boat. For those who prefer cooked dishes, the teriyaki entrees, beef negimaki, and nabeyaki udon are all solid choices. The Dinner Bento Box is a great way to sample a little of everything in one sitting.
The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, making it just as fitting for a weeknight takeout run as it is for a sit-down dinner with family. Outdoor seating is available, and they offer takeout, delivery, and catering for larger events. Vegetarian diners will find plenty of options as well, from the Vegetable
Sushi Dinner to Agedashi Tofu and Edamame.
Open seven days a week, Bonsai makes it easy to get your fix whenever the craving hits.

WHERE TO DRINK…
Whiskey Ally's — Newburgh's No-Frills Bar with a Whole Lot of Heart
If you are looking for a spot where the drinks are strong, the food hits harder than you expect, and nobody cares what you rode in on, Whiskey Ally's on Tighe Avenue in Newburgh is your kind of place. This bar and grill has quietly become one of the most talked-about neighborhood hangouts in the area, carrying a 4.7-star rating and the kind of loyalty from regulars that money cannot buy.
The bar is the centerpiece. It is dimly lit, laid back, and unapologetically itself. Whether you are grabbing a cold beer after work, catching live music on the weekends, or settling in for a late-night drink before calling it a night, the vibe is always right. The bartenders keep the place running like clockwork and have a way of making first-timers feel like they have been coming for years.
But what catches most people off guard is the food. This is not your typical bar menu phoning it in. The Whiskey Burger, an 8-ounce certified Angus patty topped with cheddar, sauteed onions, and a whiskey bourbon glaze, has people calling it one of the best burgers they have ever had. The Shrimp Scampi Pizza has become a sleeper hit that regulars swear by. The Mango Habanero Wings, Nachos Grande, and Clams on the Half Shell round out a menu that has no business being this good at a neighborhood bar. Portions are generous and prices are fair.
Whiskey Ally's also features a pool table, live music nights, and the kind of atmosphere where bikers, locals, and curious newcomers all end up at the same bar having a great time. It is a small place that packs a big punch.

WHATS NEW…
Nines — Germantown's Newest Neighborhood Gem
The corner of Church Avenue and Main Street in Germantown has always been a destination for great food. For years it was home to the beloved Gaskins, and now veteran restaurateurs Avery Jannelli and Ryan McLaughlin have breathed new life into the space with Nines, a casual French and Italian restaurant that opened its doors in April 2026.
Jannelli and McLaughlin, who are close friends of Gaskins' former owners Nick and Sarah Suarez, purchased the building last year and spent the winter renovating the dining room from top to bottom. The result is a spot that feels both polished and completely unpretentious — the kind of place where you can show up in jeans and still feel like you are having a special night out.
The menu draws from the coastlines of the French and Italian Riviera, built around a wood-fired oven and ingredients sourced directly from Columbia County farms. Standouts include mackerel crudo with butternut squash and aji amarillo vinaigrette, lamb meatballs, swordfish skewers, and a roast chicken fricassee that reviewers are already raving about. The soft-shell crab has been called outstanding. Desserts lean elegant — rice pudding with saffron honey and fennel crunch, olive oil cookie with almond cream and poached rhubarb, and a chocolate buckwheat tart. Cocktails run $16 to $17 alongside a carefully curated list of Italian and French wines.
The bar is lively and chic, but the overall atmosphere stays family friendly. Two outdoor dining areas overlook the charming town center of Germantown, perfect for warm-weather evenings. Early reviews on OpenTable give Nines a 4.4-star rating, with diners praising the food, the service, and the easygoing vibe. One repeat visitor wrote, "It just keeps getting better."
Weekend lunch service is planned for June, giving even more reason to make the trip.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT…
The Switch Inn — Where Middletown Feels Like Family
There are bars you go to for a drink, and then there are bars you go to because they feel like home. The Switch Inn on East Main Street in Middletown is the second kind. Owned by Josie Longstreet, this gastropub has built a reputation as one of the most welcoming spots in Orange County, carrying a 4.6-star rating across hundreds of reviews and a Facebook following approaching 10,000 strong.
Walk in any night of the week and you will find a mix of regulars, first-timers, and everyone in between — all treated the same way. The bartenders are a big part of why people keep coming back. Names like Jess, Kate, and Elle get shouted out in review after review, but it is the energy behind the bar that makes the place what it is. The staff does not just serve drinks. They remember your name, your order, and the story you were telling last Tuesday.
The food punches well above what you would expect from a neighborhood bar. The chicken cutlet sandwich, jumbo buffalo wings, and burger deluxe are fan favorites. The Cajun chicken wrap has a cult following. But the real sleeper hit is the late-night breakfast — buttermilk pancakes, bacon, sausage, and breakfast burritos served when most kitchens in town have been closed for hours. It is the kind of genius move that turns a good bar into an unforgettable one.
The Switch Inn also hosts live music and events that keep the calendar full and the energy high, making it not just a favorite local spot but a genuine destination.
Rally for Sammy — The Community Steps Up
This past Saturday, 31-year-old Samantha Giordano — known to everyone at The Switch Inn and across Middletown simply as Sammy — was driving to work and was injured in a serious accident. As of this writing, Sammy remains in the ICU. Her family says her injuries are extensive.
Sammy is more than a bartender at The Switch Inn. She is the one who helped build the bar's massive social media presence, showing up every shift with a smile and a work ethic that her coworkers describe as unmatched. She is also a single mom to her 7-year-old son, and has been pursuing a career in nursing on top of everything else.
"She's a single mom, a nurse, and the best bartender in Orange County," owner Josie Longstreet said.
The community response has been nothing short of extraordinary. Close to $15,000 has been raised through an online GoFundMe to help cover Sammy's medical bills, recovery, and time away from work. Cash donations continue to pour in daily at the bar. A local contractor has even volunteered to recruit a crew and landscape Sammy's backyard for free — something she had been wanting to do for her son.
Fellow bartender Kate Katzmann put it simply: "She's definitely the backbone of what the Switch Inn is, and she's the backbone of Middletown in general."

Donate in person: Cash donations accepted daily at The Switch Inn

The road ahead is long, but if there is one thing Middletown knows how to do, it is show up for its own.
